Mac G, where do you even start to describe this superstar radio man turned businessman and Africa’s favorite podcaster.
He gets his name from MacGyver from the American series, back the television MacGyver was a gifted trouble shooter and problem solver who was gifted beyond and could get himself out of any other troubled, aided by his dominating and his undying spirit.
Enter MacGyver Mukwevho, a self-stared South African jock who brought with him electrifying energy when he joined South Africa’s biggest youth-based radio station and the phenomenon that Y-FM is or ops rather was.
It not long though before Mac G is MacGyver started to believe in his own hype, emerged broadcasting whilst under the influence of alcohol and fornicating while he was supposed to be on the mic.
Mac G, where do you even begin to describe this extraordinary radio personality turned entrepreneur and Africa’s beloved podcaster? The MacGyver we know is a character from the American series. In the world of television, MacGyver was a highly skilled problem solver who possessed exceptional ingenuity and could navigate his way out of any difficult situation. Similarly, MacGyver Mukwevho, a self-made South African DJ, brought an electrifying energy when he joined South Africa’s largest youth-oriented radio station, Y-FM. Mac G quickly became a phenomenon in the industry. However, it wasn’t long before Mac G, in his MacGyver-like fashion, started to believe in his own hype. He began broadcasting while under the influence of alcohol and engaging in inappropriate behavior instead of focusing on his on-air duties.
Sadly, Mac G faced numerous setbacks after a challenging time at Y-FM and 94.7, one of South Africa’s largest commercial stations. Mac G needed to quickly find a way to reinvent himself. In July 2018, he took inspiration from Richard Dean Anderson and decided to start a YouTube channel as an experiment to stay connected with his audience. The podcast “Podcast And Chill” skyrocketed to success. However, with initial success came a challenging period where Mac G struggled to pay his crew. It was his own fans, affectionately known as the Chillers, who suggested that he share his banking details so they could support him. This served as a wake-up call for Mac G to prioritise his fans’ support and loyalty.
MacGyver chose to adopt the familiar style he was renowned for during his radio career. There was no pretense, no frills, just engaging conversations with no limits, accompanied by a plethora of witty remarks from his co-host Sol Phenduka. MacGyver and his team have made significant contributions and have emerged as one of the most influential voices in South Africa over the past six years. Their achievements include winning the Podcaster of the Year award at the VN Global Media and Entertainment Awards, being recognised as the Social Media Dominance of the Year in 2021, and amassing over 1 million subscribers on their YouTube channel, Podcast And Chill.
Like a phoenix rising from the ashes and making a triumphant return in 2016, MacGyver has reinvented himself. Not only is he hosting the Podcast and Chill show, but he is also the head of a media company. Under his leadership, the company has successfully launched Grandeur gin and Chillers punch.
